Engineering Guide

Web guiding control for edge, centerline and line-following applications

A web guide control system keeps moving material aligned as it travels through printing, coating, laminating, slitting, inspection or rewinding equipment. KRD systems combine an EPC controller, sensor feedback and actuator movement to correct lateral web position before misalignment creates waste, registration error or downstream quality problems.

Web guiding problems usually appear as edge wander, poor print registration, uneven coating position, trim waste, roll offset or slitting inconsistency. In many cases the machine already has enough mechanical precision, but the material is not entering the critical process section in the same lateral position every time.

Sensor choice

Photoelectric sensors are common for opaque webs and clear edge contrast. Ultrasonic sensors are often preferred for transparent film, low-contrast materials and dusty industrial environments.

Actuator structure

Linear actuators and integrated EPC frames should be selected by web width, guide roller span, correction stroke, load, line speed and machine mounting space.

Common web guiding problems this system is designed to solve

Selection starts with the sensing target. Edge guiding is common for film, paper, foil and nonwoven materials. Center guiding is used when both material edges must be monitored or when web width changes. Line following and mark detection are useful in printing or specialty converting applications where the edge is not the best reference.

For quotation, KRD normally reviews web width, material opacity, edge condition, line speed, correction location, actuator load, guide roller arrangement and available mounting space. This ensures the controller, sensor and actuator are sized for the actual production environment instead of being selected by model name only.

Quotation checklist for faster selection

To speed up product matching, provide web width, material type, maximum line speed, required accuracy, control location and the current quality issue. If the machine is a retrofit, include photos of the installation space and existing controller or sensor models.

This information allows KRD Automation to recommend a product family, identify compatibility risks and decide whether the application is best served by a standard component or a customized package.

Project review note

For engineering review, KRD recommends documenting the current machine issue, expected production improvement and any space or electrical limitations before final selection. This makes it easier to compare product options and avoid mismatches between catalogue specifications and real operating conditions on the production floor.
